Dear Companions, hello!
Thanks to the creators' market last weekend, we had the opportunity to introduce ourselves, present our project, our ambitions, and get to know you.
Today, we want to talk about our mascot: the radish. In this article, you will discover interesting facts or funny facts about radishes and how to grow them.
Did you know?

Speedy Radish
Radishes grow extremely fast. For some varieties, after sowing your seeds, you only have to wait 3 to 4 weeks to harvest them!

A great repellent!
When you eat a radish, you find that they have a spicy taste. Well, pests do too, which makes radishes a great insect repellent.

Everything is good inside!
The leaves of radishes are edible; they can be used in soups, salads, and more!

A Mexican star
In Oaxaca, Mexico, every December 23rd, there is a festival called "Noche de Rábanos" (Night of the Radishes). Artists carve giant radishes to create stunning works of art. These sculptures can represent everything from religious scenes to mythological figures.

An ancient vegetable
It seems that radishes were part of the rations for the workers responsible for building the pyramids. Indeed, they needed a nutritious vegetable that was easy and quick to grow, and that could thrive in difficult weather conditions.

A real cameleon
Ultimately, the radish is the champion of adaptation. Depending on where the radishes are grown, the temperature, the weather, the type of soil, etc... radishes will adopt completely different shapes and colors! For example, a radish that grows in moist, cool soil will be sweet and smooth, while it will be spicy and twisted in dry, warm soil.
How to grow them?
Radishes are planted after the frosts of March until September and are planted in a sunny corner of your garden.
To plant your radishes, it's very simple! Dig furrows spaced 30 cm apart and place the seeds in them without crowding them too much (generally, we count on 1 to 3 cm of spacing). Then, cover the seeds with 1 cm to 3 cm of soil, lightly pack it down, and water. When the leaves start to appear, thin out the radishes that are too close together. Water regularly to keep the soil moist. Radishes are ready to be harvested when they are slightly above the soil or have reached a sufficiently large size. You should not let them grow too long either, as they risk becoming hollow.
As for cooking them, we will experiment ourselves with the radishes from the November contest to then offer you some good recipes! 😋
